By Dan, on January 28th, 2011 In the last couple weeks the girls have discovered the joy of climbing. If they can get a leg up onto it and find a handhold, chances are they’ll try to climb it. This means that when we make a trip to the neighborhood park, the swing set is no longer the main attraction. Now they’re most interested in climbing up the various platforms on the multi-level play structure, and then whizzing down the slide before racing back around to do it all again. They’re not quite coordinated enough yet to call it “scampering” but I’m sure it won’t be long. Many of the pictures here show them coming down the slide, but I actually think they enjoy the climbing even more than the sliding. They would climb even if there was no slide. Still, they’re fun pictures, so enjoy!

By Dan, on January 3rd, 2011 Just before New Year’s Eve, Janet and I took the girls to visit some friends up at their cabin in Dorrington, which is down the hill a bit from Bear Valley Ski Resort. For many years, hanging out at the cabin after Christmas has been something that I look forward to literally all year long, but we didn’t get to go last year because the girls were still so young and small. So this year, we were very excited to be invited up again. We only stayed for a few days, and I didn’t have time to go skiing, but we did have a fantastic time visiting with our friends and playing in the snow with our girls. I can’t think of a better way to close out one year and begin another. Here are some pictures of Carolyn and Elizabeth’s first experience playing in the snow! Enjoy.
We got them all bundled up in snow clothes, and they didn't seem to mind the cold!
It didn't take Elizabeth long to decide she enjoyed being pulled around in the sled!
Carolyn had some fun just sitting here playing with the snow!
There were so many new things to investigate and explore!
I was very pleased that she wasn't constantly trying to take her mittens off.
After being towed around in the sled for a while, Elizabeth rode with Daddy for some real downhill sledding fun!
She seemed to enjoy it, for the most part.
Next it was Carolyn's turn to go with Mommy...
Carolyn seemed to enjoy the sledding run also...
...until she got a face full of snow at the ride's conclusion, that is.
By Dan, on December 27th, 2010 Indeed, we do feel very blessed! We’ve had a wonderful year watching our little girls grow up, bit by bit; every day they’re exploring and learning new things. We are very thankful that for the most part, they’re very happy little girls — and they bring us great joy as well. Since they’re 1½ now, Carolyn and Elizabeth were able to be much more involved in the festivities this year. They had much fun tearing at the wrapping paper and playing with their new toys.
Some of the highlights so far… They were very amused (at least initially) with a little jack in the box toy, where you turn the little crank to make the song play, until eventually a friendly looking pirate pops up out of the box. They also got a nice fuzzy rocking dog toy that they can ride on — that’s right, a dog, not a horse. They’re not quite big enough yet to climb up without help, but I’m sure it won’t be long. Even before it was fully unwrapped, they instantly responded to it like a giant stuffed animal, pressing their faces against its head and saying “Awwwww…” (Whenever they give hugs to a doll or stuffed animal, they always make that sound, presumably because it’s what they always hear other people say whenever they do something really cute like that.) Each of them also got their own little toy cell phones that flip open, complete with LED screens that light up and lots of beeping buttons that they can push. Since Daddy’s remote controls are off-limits, they’re quite fascinated by these. In fact, they were so intrigued by them that it was difficult to get them put them down in order to open other presents! It probably won’t be long before I want to take the batteries out of them… On the other hand, I guess this gives us some leverage, and now we can threaten to take away their cell phones if they start misbehaving.

By Janet, on November 20th, 2010 What a difference a year makes! Last year the girls couldn’t even sit up for their Halloween pictures (we had to prop them up on the sofa). This year they’re toddling all over the place and won’t stay still long enough to get a picture of them together. We met their cousins at the Pumpkin Party at church. The girls were quite intrigued by all the people — maybe because they’re not used to seeing people in costumes; or maybe simply because they’re not used to seeing so many people.
And now without further ado, here are some pictures of the girls in their Halloween costumes.

By Dan, on October 27th, 2010 After we had finished dinner tonight, the girls were scampering about and playing, bringing us shoes or toys, and telling us with their eyes whenever they wanted a hug. It was a pretty normal evening. A nice evening. And then something really funny happened.
Elizabeth reached up and grabbed one of the remote controls off the little table next to my rocking chair — something that she knows she isn’t supposed to do. Janet noticed right away, got up and said “No honey, please don’t play with that.” And as you might expect, when Janet took it away and replaced it on the table, Elizabeth launched into a little pouty fit — she plopped down on the floor, flung herself backward (bonking her head a little bit), and she began a whiny tantrum sort of cry. This sort of thing doesn’t happen very often, but we’ve seen it before. By itself, this would be only mildly amusing at best.
Now, Carolyn was standing perhaps ten feet away at the time, and was completely involved in doing her own thing. I’m not even sure if she saw what happened with the remote control. But when she saw Elizabeth plop down on the floor and start crying, Carolyn marched right over to her sister’s side, and in an amazing and somewhat touching display of sisterly solidarity, she plopped down on the floor right next to Elizabeth and started up crying as well!
Janet had to turn her face away to hide her laughter. I just sat there wide-eyed and watched the two of them, lying on their backs, side by side on the floor, kicking their little feet and crying furiously — and all I could think was oh great, they’ve already learned to gang up on us.
